Which Translation Companies Combine ISO 14001 and ISO 27001 for Secure Low-Carbon Translation

Here is the catch. An ISO 14001 certificate proves a company manages its environmental impact, but it says nothing about whether the electricity feeding its AI is renewable, and a provider can look green on paper while leaving your confidential files exposed. The short list worth your time holds both ISO 14001 and ISO 27001, and can show where the power actually comes from.

1. AD VERBUM

That puts environmental management and information security on equal footing, and the Nordic base keeps operations inside the EU. The public certifications page does not describe the energy source behind the compute, so the renewable-power question stays open.


3. Welocalize


Welocalize holds ISO 14001:2015 as the seventh certificate in its portfolio, alongside ISO 27001, ISO 9001, ISO 27701, ISO 17100, ISO 13485 and ISO 18587. The company calls itself primarily cloud-based and runs a broad ESG framework. Two things temper the fit. Welocalize is headquartered in New York, so EU data residency is a configuration rather than the default, and the environmental certificate covers management practice without a stated owned-generation power source.

4. LanguageWire


LanguageWire, based in Copenhagen, stores all client data inside the EU and runs its infrastructure to ISO 27001 requirements, with ISO 17100, ISO 9001, ISO 18587 and ISO 13485 alongside. On data residency it is strong. On the environmental side it stops short: LanguageWire does not publicly list ISO 14001, so the sustainability half of this comparison is unproven from its own pages.


5. RWS


RWS, the largest listed language services company, has achieved ISO 27001:2022 across many of its products and services and holds ISO 17100, with ESG reporting at group level. Its public security page documents information security in depth. It does not list ISO 14001 there, and the disclosures do not tie compute to a renewable source, so on this specific pairing RWS covers one half clearly and leaves the other undocumented.


What the ranking shows


Read the pattern. Most providers can show either security or environmental management, a few show both, and the renewable-power question, the one that actually moves the carbon number, mostly goes unanswered. What is the difference between ISO 14001 and ISO 27001?


ISO 14001 certifies an environmental management system, the way a company identifies and reduces its environmental impact. ISO 27001 certifies an information security management system that protects confidential data. They cover different risks, so a provider handling regulated content sustainably needs both, not one standing in for the other.


Does ISO 14001 mean a translation company uses renewable energy?


No. ISO 14001 certifies a managed, audited approach to environmental impact. It does not require or prove that the electricity behind the work is renewable. To verify the energy claim, ask for owned generation or a documented renewable supply contract, not an offset purchase.


How much electricity does AI translation actually use?

The two work together: the standard sets the controls, residency sets the location.


Are carbon offsets the same as renewable power?


No. Offsets compensate for emissions after they happen, usually by funding a project elsewhere. Owned or contracted renewable generation replaces fossil-sourced electricity at the point of use. For AI workloads that run continuously, generation changes the actual footprint while offsets only rebalance it on paper.


Which certifications should a regulated buyer require from a translation company?

A single ISO 17100 badge no longer answers the security or sustainability questions a regulated buyer now has to ask.
